Values Project Launched for Students in Albay

REMEMBERING OUR GOOD MANNERS AND RIGHT CONDUCT. Schools in Albay will be implementing a project which aims to reiterate and strengthen the good values of students. The project is a collaborative effort between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the provincial government of Albay. It will be called “K-PO.”

Albay Schools Division Superintendent Bebiano Sentillas said in a speech that the project’s aim is to instill in the youth the teachings of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

He adds that the project will assist the mentors in utilizing more creative and integrative ways of teaching values.

DepEd-Albay decided to come up with “K-PO” after realizing the need to reinforce teaching of values to the youth.

Under the project, each school in the division will be known as a “Charter School.”

Value Awareness and the Different Initiatives of K-PO

The office of the school head is expected to feature the DepEd’s core values (Maka-Diyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan, Makabansa) in a creative way.

The program also recommends that class sections can be named after values, preferably in Filipino.

Charter Schools likewise focus on a specific value for a certain month. To create awareness, a short program shall be held after each school’s flag ceremony, and a color-coded value banner will also be displayed.

Each school or class is also encouraged to have a “Tree of Goodness.” Students and personnel can hang a symbol, card, item, or notes of good things they have done throughout the year.

Schools will also put up bulletin boards, showing snapshots of good deeds by anybody in the school.

Role models

The program also introduces two characters to represent positive values to the youth – Yhanokz and Mayhana.

Yhanokz (derived from “Albayano”) is a millennial nickname for anyone who is young and has a good heart. Mayhana (derived from “Maria Albayana”) represents an image of a young and simple female Albayanon. Both represent DepEd-Albay’s mantra to serve, excel, care, and connect.

Every month, both characters will visit a particular municipality to interact with learners from elementary to secondary levels, and give rewards to students who demonstrate good qualities.

Al Frances Bichara, Governor of Albay, said that the project is very timely because the youth today need to relearn good values.

“This is all about the good manners and right conduct that every learner should never forget,” said Bichara.
