Davao Schools and Local Communities Continue to Benefit from DA and DepEd’s ‘Gulayan’ Program

Students continue to harvest the benefits of the government’s Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP), according to officials.

Director of the Department of Agriculture in Region 11 (DA-11) Ricardo Oñate said that the GPP helps in raising the awareness on health and nutrition among students. The program, which is a joint project of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Education (DepEd), also plays a vital role in combating malnutrition in school and local communities.

The Best GPP implementers for school year 2018-2019 were recognized on Friday. Oñate led the awarding ceremonies.

In the container garden, Elementary category, the Guihing Central Elementary School, Davao del Sur won first place, followed by Mawab Central Elementary School, Compostela Valley Province in second place and Tuburan Village Elementary School, Davao Oriental in third place.

In the High School category, Tagum City National Comprehensive High School, Davao del Norte bagged first place. Basiawan National High School, Davao Occidental and Andili National High School, Compostela Valley Province were second and third place respectively.

Schools that won for Field Garden category for both Elementary and High School were also recognized.

Not without support

Oñate credited the evaluators, which composed of DA and DepEd personnel and GPP coordinators of the participating schools, for the project’s success.

“It is very comforting to witness how the GPP has evolved not only as an effective advocacy tool but also on how it has mobilized and transformed various schools and communities into a united and bankable force in our fight against malnutrition,” said Oñate.
