Can You Really Eat Healthy On a Budget?

Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. However, during times of financial uncertainty or when living on a tight budget, finding nutritious and affordable food can be challenging. Here are tips on how you can eat healthy on a budget.

Always plan ahead

Saving money on food involves changing shopping habits. Create a shopping list! Find affordable recipes and plan meals for the week. Eat out less. Fast food may seem cheap, but cooking at home is more economical. Preparing meals like beef stew or roast chicken with vegetables costs less and provides leftovers.

Make smart choices

Ditch unhealthy foods like soda, cookies, and processed meals from your list as they’re expensive and lack nutritional value, leading to health issues and higher medical costs. Buy frozen fruits, as they are more cost-effective and last longer than fresh produce. Whole grains like brown rice, oats, and quinoa are healthier than processed alternatives. Prices in the grocery store may fluctuate, but there’s always Lazada and Shopee!

Find cheaper protein options

Protein is essential for many bodily functions, but meat and fish can be expensive. Adjust your diet to include cheaper protein sources without sacrificing nutrition. Choose less expensive cuts of meat. Slow cooking can make these cuts delicious and tender. Try vegan proteins like soy, tofu, beans, and lentils, but avoid processed veggie meats! Use eggs for meals beyond breakfast. Veggie omelets and frittatas are quick, healthy, and inexpensive. Probiotic foods like yogurt are also good protein sources, which is perfect for desserts.
