Philippines rises to 55th spot in technological readiness ranking

The Philippines is proving that it is keeping up with the technological changes in the world, as it climbed to the 55th spot out of 82 economies tracked in the latest Technological Readiness Ranking.

According to the survey published by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the country has improved in terms of its preparedness for technological developments in the succeeding years.

The Philippines received a score of 5.5, landing on the same spot with Sri Lanka, Jordan, Colombia, Kazakhstan, and Serbia.

Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, the Philippines ranks as the 4th most tech-ready economy.

To obtain the rankings, the EIU measured the preparedness of governments, businesses, and individuals for digital disruption from this year until 2022. Moreover, the results were based on three key categories, namely openness to innovation, access to the internet, and digital economy infrastructure.

EIU analyst Anwita Basu said in an interview that the situation in the Philippines “is not as favorable as compared to other countries in the region.” However, Basu believes that the country will make progress in certain areas such as internet connectivity speed, cyber security, and e-government portals.

The EIU’s technological readiness ranking was topped by Australia, Singapore, and Sweden. Meanwhile, Libya and Angola ended up at the bottom of the index.
