The Philippines’ first ‘Landport’ opens

The Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), a flagship project of the Duterte administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program and the country’s first state-of-the-art intermodal land terminal, was inaugurated yesterday by President Rodrigo Duterte.

“As the first integrated and multi-modal terminal in the southwestern part of Metro Manila, PITX is a landmark project – a ‘landport’ that feels and functions like an airport,” said Duterte during his speech in the inauguration.

Located along Coastal Road, the PITX serves as the transfer point between provincial busses coming from the south of Luzon and the different modes of transportation into Metro Manila.

It boasts of modern facilities that aims to improve the daily commute from Cavite and Batangas to Metro Manila – similar to an airport, the PITX features separate arrival and departure areas, schedule monitoring systems, automated ticketing, baggage handling facilities, as well as spacious waiting areas, commercial and retail establishments, and quality restrooms.

The country’s first landport can accommodate up to 400 buses an hour and up to 200,000 passengers a day, and has multiple jeepney and UV Express terminals, as well as areas for taxis and transport network services. It will help ensure efficient and seamless travel for the public by providing interconnectivity between the different modes of land travel.

Terminal management also assures commuters that colorum vehicles will not allowed to operate in the PITX, as operators will be screened by the LTFRB.

The PITX will also connect to the LRT line 1 extension to Bacoor, Cavite, which is targeted to be completed by 2021.

The benefit of the PITX is two-fold: aside from passenger convenience, the transport hub also aims to aid in the decongestion of Metro Manila.

President Duterte explains that the the landport “will offer passengers a safer, state-of-the-art, and convenient terminal experience that will hopefully contribute in addressing traffic congestion in Metro Manila,” as well as ease traffic by limiting provincial buses plying the roads in Metro Manila, particularly in Roxas Boulevard and EDSA-Taft.

World-class amenities and offerings

The PITX is seen as a landmark transportation hub, and offers world-class services not typically found in most terminals in the country.

Features include pay lounges with shower rooms, as well as 12,000 square meters of leasable space that will feature food and beverage, retail shops, banks, courier services, and other service options.

It even features a gender-neutral bathroom for passengers who are gender nonconforming, or parents who have to accompany young children of a different gender.

In addition, four office-grade towers are also located in the PITX, which will allow tenants to benefit from the facility’s strategic location and access to transportation. Each tower has a net leasable area of 17,900 square meters, with the first tower scheduled to open during the first half of 2019.

The PITX is the first of three intermodal terminals under the administration’s infrastructure plan – next in the pipeline is the Taguig Integrated Terminal Exchange, and the North Integrated Terminal Exchange in Bulacan.

It was constructed under a concession agreement between the government and MWM Terminals, Inc., which is a consortium of Megawide Construction Corporation and WM Property Management. This public-private partnership was halted in 2015 under the Aquino administration, but was reinstated under the current administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program.
