DOE Encourages Gov Offices to Promote Energy Efficiency

LEAD BY EXAMPLE. DOE (Department of Energy) Energy Utilization and Management Bureau (EUMB) OIC Director Jesus Tamang urged 220 representatives of local government units, regional line agencies, and government institutions to promote energy efficiency.

This happened during the Seminar on Energy Efficiency in the Government at the Hotel Supreme Convention Plaza last week.

Tamang stressed that government agencies should serve as the role model of the people when it comes to energy efficiency. They can lead by example through the implementation of the Government Energy Management Program, which aims to reduce the average monthly consumption of electricity and fuel in government offices and entities by at least ten percent.

He also said that cooperation is key to the implementation of the GEMP.  Once successfully implemented, it will help show that the government does not give directives, enact laws, and issue policies strictly for the private sector. Tamang also added the immense potential in energy efficiency and conservation advocacy of LGUs.

The EE&C advocacy will strengthen under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE & C) Roadmap (2017 – 2040), which contains the passage of an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Law; continuation of the IEC (Information, Education and Communication) across the energy sector, integration of the EE&C in the learning and education system, and the standardization of the EE&C at the LGU level.

Participants in the Seminar on Energy Efficiency in the Government were also able to see the survey result on government agencies in regards to air conditioning systems and lighting fixtures. They also got a chance to learn EE&C opportunities in government buildings and hear about the EE&C success story from the Philippine Economic Zone – Baguio.

The DOE – EUMB, led by Director Jesus Tamang, is mandated to come up with policies, plans, and programs relating to EE&C as well as alternative fuels and energy technologies. The agency is also tasked to improve energy security by diversifying the energy sources and address climate change.
