AboitizPower Establishes New Unit for Solar Rooftop Development

With its newly formed subsidiary for solar rooftop development, Aboitiz Power Corp. is leading the charge in developing renewable, non-polluting source of energy.

AboitizPower, in a company report, stated that its unit Aboitiz Power Distributed Renewables Inc. (APX) is open for opportunities and collaboration with other business units within the group. Currently, the company is in talks with at least eight customers for their solar rooftops.

The new subsidiary is solely focused on solar rooftop developments, which further expands the company’s renewable energy portfolio under its Cleanergy brand.

“At least eight more customers in various locations across Luzon and Visayas have agreed to terms with APX for the installation of rooftop solar,” said AboitizPower.

“These are in the process of obtaining regulatory permits and contracting and are expected to be announced once these processes are completed,” the company added.

Starting Small

APX initially started with projects within the company.

In February of last year, a 100-kilowatt (kw) solar rooftop was installed on the Aboitiz Corporate Office in Banilad, Cebu. Since then, it has produced over 81,000 kilowatt-hours of power. This allowed Cebu Praedia Development Corp., which is the owner of the facility, to gain significant savings in electricity cost.

“It is expected that applying performance data analytics will allow APX to provide a robust view of the impact of distributed rooftop solar to customers’ energy service experience,” said AboitizPower.

Aside from the corporate office in Cebu, APX has an agreement with AboitizLand Inc. to install a 1.5-megawatt (MW) solar rooftop for The Outlets in Lipa at the Lima Technology Center.

“APX expects this project to supply revenue for the next 20 years, starting January,” it said.

Pursing Renewable Energy

Under the Cleanergy brand, AboitizPower has built several renewable energy plants including its geothermal, run-of-river hydro, and large hydropower facilities placed all over the country.

This initiative helps create economic opportunities in various host communities while further expanding its business portfolio.

The 69-MW peak (MWp) San Carlos Sun (Sacasun) project in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental in 2016 was the company’s first foray into the solar power market.

The total net sellable capacity of AboitizPower’s investments in various thermal and renewable power generating facilities with its partners is 3,350 MW. 1,272 MW of that or 39 percent is from its Cleanergy brand.

The firm aims for a balanced mix strategy: to maximize Cleanergy while taking advantage of the thermal power plants’ reliability and cost-efficiency.

AboitizPower has distribution utilities in high-growth areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao including the second and third largest private utilities in the country.
