Backpacking Puerto Galera: What’s Beyond the Reef
Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro has long been on the radar of both divers and backpackers.
The name “Puerto Galera” means “Port of Galleons,” as the bay was once used as a safe harbor for trade ships. By 1574, it became the capital of Mindoro under Spanish rule, helping establish its role in early maritime commerce. These days, the port welcomes a different kind of traveler—those chasing coral reefs, laidback beaches, and a few surprises beyond the dive spots.
How to Get There
From Metro Manila, you can catch a bus to Batangas Port from terminals like the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) or Buendia in Pasay. The bus ride typically takes around two to three hours, depending on traffic conditions.
Upon arrival at Batangas Port, purchase ferry or fast craft tickets to Balatero Pier. Ferry schedules vary, with departures starting as early as 6:00 AM and the last trip around 4:30 PM. Travel time ranges from approximately 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the boat type.
At Balatero Pier, you can take a tricycle or a local boat to your specific destination within Puerto Galera. Tricycles are readily available at the pier and offer a convenient mode of transport to nearby areas.
Diving in the Heart of the Coral Triangle
Puerto Galera is part of the Coral Triangle, the world’s richest marine biodiversity hotspot. It hosts over 75% of the world’s coral species and many reef fish. Nearby, the Verde Island Passage is known as the “Center of the Center of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity.” It features vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life.
The area offers excellent opportunities for diving, free diving, and snorkeling. Its coral gardens are filled with reef fish, turtles, and other sea creatures—sea urchins, beware. This makes Puerto Galera one of the best and most accessible dive sites in Asia.
Beaches, Nightlife, and Local Culture
Once in Puerto Galera, you’ll find plenty to do beyond the underwater world. White Beach remains the hotspot for visitors looking for a lively atmosphere. Bars, restaurants, and water sports like jet skiing and kayaking keep the energy high. Meanwhile, the local food scene offers fresh seafood and Filipino favorites served at beachfront eateries and night markets, giving you a true taste of Mindoro’s flavors.
Let’s talk about the nightlife! Aside from the parties at White Beach, the area hosts various bars and clubs where locals and travelers gather for music and socializing. Weekend parties bring together backpackers and locals, making this a part of the culture. And occasionally, live concerts and DJ sets light up the night, adding extra excitement to your stay.
For those seeking quieter surroundings, Talipanan Beach offers a peaceful escape with soft white sand and calm waters—ideal for relaxing or snorkeling in gentle currents. Additionally, other beaches such as Aninuan and Sabang offer their own charms with fewer crowds and a more laid-back vibe.
