Young inventors bring pride to Angeles city

A SPARK OF GENIUS. Some of the biggest dreams come from the smallest places. Would you agree? This was certainly the case for these young inventors. They hail from no less than the province of Pampanga. While many of our renowned inventors come from big research firms and universities, these kids proved they can cut it on an international level.

The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) has awarded an honorable mention to pupils from the Angeles City Science High School (ACSHS). The award was for their research entitled “Hibla” at the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

The event was held in the United States, in Phoenix, Arizona, from May 12 to 17. The students placed 4th over 1,840 research projects. There were participants from 84 nations.

Comprising the team of young inventors were E’van Relle Matic Tongol, Neil David Cortez Cayanan, and Shaira Castro Gozun.

The science behind it

“Hibla” is a study that explores alternative sound absorption materials. Examples of these are natural fibers like bamboo, abaca, and water hyacinth.

At a ceremony and courtesy call with Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, the local leader praised the team. “Your ingenuity and creative minds have brought another accolade for our beloved city,” said Pamintuan.

“We at the local government are also celebrating your triumph as you successfully raised our flag in the international arena, and brought home another pride for the Filipinos to treasure.”

Homegrown talent, world-class quality

Mayor Pamintuan said it best. What these young inventors prove is that “Angeleños are truly world-class.”

That’s because these same students had won before. Earlier in the year, they also won in the 2019 National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF).

Lolita Bautista, research adviser of the delegation, broke the news that there are individuals and companies in the US who have expressed interest on the project.

However, the students believe that Filipinos should be the first to benefit from their invention, saying no to any and all offers abroad.

Negotiations for the patent of intellectual property are now currently happening between the ACSHS and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Fortunately, Mayor Pamintuan is also personally lobbying their inquiry to DOST in order to expedite the patenting process.

Let’s support our young inventors! Go Philippines!
