Why is February National Arts Month?
Every February, the Philippines celebrates National Arts Month (NAM), which is dedicated to recognizing and promoting Filipino creativity. But why was this month chosen? More importantly, how does this impact the country’s artistic community?
How It Started
National Arts Month was officially declared in 1991 through Proclamation No. 683, signed by late former President Corazon Aquino. This proclamation aimed to promote, preserve, and develop Philippine arts and culture.
With this in mind, February was chosen to align with the anniversary of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the lead government agency in advancing Filipino heritage and the arts.
More on the NCAA
As previously mentioned, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA) is the primary cultural agency of the government. It plays a vital role in the success of NAM through funding, logistical support, and coordination for various events. All while ensuring that artists from different regions receive equal opportunities to share their talents.
The NCAA also partners with private organizations, media, and academic institutions to expand the reach of its cultural programs.
February’s Significance for Filipino Arts
Though commonly known as the “love month,” February as National Arts Month transcends love and romance. It becomes a time to celebrate the country’s rich artistic heritage. Having this month-long celebration provides a platform for Filipino artists to showcase their work, highlighting the importance of creativity in national identity.
Through NAM, various art disciplines are being recognized and supported, such as music, dance, theater, literature, visual arts, architecture, and cinema.

How Do We Celebrate NAM?
Every year, the NCAA organizes a series of events under the moniker “Ani ng Sining” (Harvest of the Arts). Activities include art festivals, workshops, exhibitions, performances, and competitions that take place nationwide.
Not only that, schools, cultural institutions, and local government units (LGUs) also host their own artistic programs, ensuring that appreciation of the arts reaches different communities in the Philippines.
When February is Over…
While National Arts Month serves as a focal point for artistic celebration, supporting Filipino arts should extend beyond February.
As individuals, we can attend local art events, purchase works from Filipino artists and businesses, and promote their creations through social media. Meanwhile, educational institutions can fund and integrate arts appreciation programs, and even businesses can sponsor other artistic initiatives.
Conclusion
National Arts Month reminds us that we Filipinos are creative at heart. By actively valuing and investing in the arts, we can sustain a thriving cultural landscape all year round. Furthermore, support for the arts beyond the mandated February timeline helps preserve and enrich the country’s cultural heritage for generations to come.
