Single-Use Plastics Now Banned in Sipalay Government Offices

The goal is to become the cleanest and greenest locality in Western Visayas. In order to achieve that, Sipalay City Mayor Oscar Montilla Jr. has banned the use of plastic in the city’s government offices.

On Monday, Mayor Montilla has signed Memorandum Order No. 86, which regulates the use of plastic and polystyrene products in all government offices and in all activities conducted therein.

He also stressed the city government’s crucial role in protecting the environment as well as promoting sustainable development.

According to the order, single-use plastics like straws, cups, spoons and forks, as well as soft drinks in plastic bottles are prohibited in Sipalay’s government offices.

On top of that, food vendors are no longer allowed to use plastic bags or other single-use plastics as food containers. Food caterers are also required to provide their own plates, utensils, and drinking glasses. Even the canteen is banned from using plastic. Hence, customers and employees are encouraged to bring their own mugs and container bottles.

Additionally, every office is mandated to segregate their wastes in color-coded containers.

People who will conduct activities such as department heads, organizers, coordinators, etc. are strictly required to comply with the memorandum.

Businesses that will violate the order will get their business permits revoked by the Business Permits and Licensing Office. The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), on the other hand, will monitor and report compliance. Lastly, the Human Resource Management Office will create measures for erring employees and design an incentive system that will encourage the practice of solid waste management.
