PNP: Crime went down 7% due to drug war

The plunge was driven by a dip in index crimes that include carnapping, cattle rustling, murder, homicide, physical injury, homicide, theft, robbery, and rape.

An October 5 statement from the Philippine National Police (PNP) revealed some encouraging numbers:

“From a total of 393,150 incidents from January to August last year, police have recorded a crime volume of 364,915 in the first eight months this year, or a reduction of 7.18 percent,” reports Aaron Recuenco.

Police Director Augusto Marquez Jr., chief of PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM) credits the drop in murder cases to the PNP’s intensified campaign against criminality, corruption, and illegal drugs. He cited that prior to President Rodrigo Duterte’s election, murder numbers had risen to “1,265 incidents compared to the 803 cases from June to July 2016.”

“The police official said that during the same period, theft is still the most prevalent crime, which makes up 32.65 percent of the total index crime distribution but noted that it has significantly declined by 30.53 percent as compared to the same period in the previous year.”

Marquez issued the statement following the increasing number of killings of suspects involved in illegal drugs. Last week, PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa cited the improving peace and order situation in the country amid the government’s drug crackdown,” writes Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo.
