CHANGE HAS COME for the women of Pangasinan. According to records of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office Women and their Children Protection Desk, the number of violence against women in the province dropped by 49 percent in the first three months of 2018.

From 263 from the same period last year, cases of violence against women are now down to 134 this year.

However, cases of attempted rape slightly increased to four this year from three in 2017.

With regards to sexual harassment and mail-order bride incidents, Poblete said that there were zero cases reported this year compared to one sexual harassment and 50 mail-order bride incidents in the previous year.

Moreover, violations of Republic Act (RA) 9262, also known as “The Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004”, decreased by 23 percent from January to March this year compared to data from the same period last year.

Poblete said that in order to prevent violence against women and children, strict implementation of minor curfew hours, information dissemination about RA 9262, police visibility, and training on basic self-defense are important.

Meanwhile, intervention programs and projects for the victims are made available in the forms of livelihood training, counseling, and dialogue.
