Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte and Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter Charles Paire O’Neill were both present during the signing of a joint declaration on agricultural cooperation at the Malacañang Palace on Wednesday, May 16.

Aimed at expanding and strengthening the agro-industries in both countries, the Joint Declaration on Agriculture Cooperation was signed by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol and Papua New Guinea Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Benny Allan.

Duterte said in his speech that the Joint Declaration “signifies the shared commitment of the Philippines and Papua New Guinea” in the expansion and strengthening of their bilateral relations in the field of agriculture and agro-industries.

Meanwhile, O’Neill expressed his appreciation of the agreement between the two states, which will “advance again the agriculture relationship between our countries, particularly in the production of rice in our country where we need to ensure that there is food security for both Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.”

The Prime Minister also acknowledged and thanked the Filipino citizens who currently live and work in Papua New Guinea for their contributions to his country’s economic progress and for providing “good technical support” particularly in the fields of education and health.

Duterte said that he expects to work closely with Prime Minister O’Neill. The President also congratulated Mr. O’Neill and expressed his full support for Papua New Guinea’s chairmanship of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) in 2018.
