Laguna Eats: A Simple San Pedro Foodtrip

In for a simple San Pedro foodtrip? Follow one of our staffers as she takes a walk back in time to the flavors of her childhood. Let’s go!

Errands day in the busiest part of San Pedro, Laguna led me to re-explore the go-to meryenda spots in our town. I realized how our small city is big on simple moments and unique combinations of our usual Filipino meryenda. Let’s explore Pansit Maciang and other spots you may not be familiar with if you’re not from here.

When people talk about Laguna, places like Enchanted Kingdom, hot springs, and resorts are typically mentioned. The progressive city of San Pedro however, doesn’t have quite the same exciting staycation spots.

Being the first district of the Laguna province, it can be likened to its neighboring city, Muntinlupa. Part city, part province. That’s what we’ve been called. A touch of the urban life, while still enjoying fresh air.

San Pedro is home to the Sampaguita Festival, celebrated every second week of February, industrial factories, and of course, food that we residents enjoy, especially during afternoons after school, work, or a long day in the market.

Universal Ensaymada

One San Pedro meryenda favorite is Universal Bakery’s mamon and ensaymada. You’ll know it’s well-loved since it normally gets sold out before the store closes, especially in the afternoons.

What makes the Universal Bakery ensaymada special is its savory bacon bits. Alongside its fluffy bread, topped with butter & sugar glaze, then grated with cheddar cheese. It’s reminiscent of snack breaks in school or go-to snacks during educational field trips.

Pansit Maciang: Like No Other

If Malabon City has its Pansit Malabon, San Pedro is proud to have Maciang’s Pansit. Since the 1950’s, Pansit Maciang or Maciang’s has been serving the town-favorite regular pansit bihon with egg and banana ketchup.

The simple, yet best-selling menu of Maciang’s.

This quaint corner eatery has been the traditional go-to pansit resto of many San Pedro residents. Afternoons are usually spent enjoying Maciang’s regular pansit with egg, a piece of toasted monay, and a refreshing soft drink of choice. Pansit Maciang is also available with egg and proven or chicken proven.

You can order a toasted bun (monay) or egg sandwich for a more filling meal.

Hungry citizens of San Pedro who can’t visit the eatery can now order their beloved pansit combo through Food Panda.

Add more ketchup to your regular bihon with available condiments by your table.

Meryenda by the plaza

Pre-pandemic afternoons aren’t complete without unwinding by the town plaza.

Most times, it’s full of students, churchgoers, and passers-by needing cheap, yet filling food. That’s where Bhonette’s Lugawan comes in. And with the demand of its daily customers on the rise, they are now open 24 hours and for delivery.

Enjoy a filling bowl of their famous Goto or Arroz Caldo, paired with a side dish. Whether it’s pieces of fried tofu, tokwa’t baboy, lumpiang togue, or kwek-kwek, it’s sure to fit within a P100-budget.

While most of us are dying to take trips outside of our homes, towns or even countries, it still hits different when you get to revisit places that you’re familiar with, especially ones that hit close to home – literally.

Go visit your town’s local spots, whether alone or with your childhood buddies. Revisit the old and familiar, yet leave with new stories and memories.
