Going Green

SM Sustainability Efforts hit a whole new level!

This holiday season, The SM Group gives us and the planet the gift of lasting sustainability. And here's how they are doing it!

At the beginning of 2021, The SM Group set higher sustainability goals. And they met those goals throughout the year! As the company’s footprint continues to grow, let’s take a look at their efforts to make each move sustainable.

Why Sustainable?

For generations, SM has been a household brand for Filipinos. Especially during the holidays where most of our countrymen do their shopping and dining. But what we don’t know is that those simple mundane tasks also contribute to SM’s carbon footprint. Sadly, without a sustainability framework, our SM tradition could potentially harm the planet.

Brilliantly though, The SM Group has always been ahead of the game!

Efforts Through the Years

In the past, they already saw this coming. So, they built new business frameworks that incorporate sustainability into their daily operations. And those frameworks resulted in greener technologies. Eventually, they started operating on recycled water, eco-friendly cooling systems, allocations of bike lanes, green building standards, etc. But it doesn’t end there.

We have news that they will continue to allot 10 percent of their capital expenditures for sustainability efforts. Rightfully, investing for integrated disaster resilient and sustainability features in the design of their infrastructure.

Whether it’s a mall or a residence, we can be sure that the SM brand guarantees our long-lasting safety.

For the Future

They have promised to continue such a framework. And that they will integrate sustainability in everything their businesses do. For specifics, SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) also helps social enterprises enter the mainstream market.

Once again, they are committing to specific sustainability targets that they shall follow for years to come.

“In our developments, we promote sustainable practices – we recycle an average of 36 percent of our water annually, we have eight malls with solar power and our property group aims to increase our use of renewable energy sources to 50 percent by 2022,” said Frederic DyBuncio, President and CEO of SMIC.

They also promise to build an ecosystem that fosters sustainable businesses that are catalysts for responsible development in the communities served by the SM Group.

“We can only be as resilient as our communities are – so our programs should naturally serve our communities’ interest and contribute to their sustainability and resiliency.”

To ensure these efforts last, SM will revisit its current framework to meet the evolving needs of its stakeholders and to effect a positive impact on a greater scale.
