SM Supermalls: Cleaning Up Our Coastlines, One Beach at a Time

The Philippines is famous for its beautiful beaches, but the growing problem of coastal pollution threatens these shorelines. In response, SM Supermalls, through SM Cares, is spearheading shoreline restoration efforts to combat this issue. This year, the International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC) is set to take place on September 21 in 15 SM Supermalls nationwide. From SM By the Bay at Mall of Asia to SM City General Santos, volunteers will unite to clean up the shorelines and restore the beauty of these coastal areas.

The Importance of Coastal Clean-Up

Shoreline restoration is essential for preserving the Philippines’ natural beauty. Every year, thousands of tons of trash end up on beaches and coasts, with most of it being plastic. These pollutants harm marine life and destroy ecosystems. Moreover, trash-filled beaches discourage tourists and affect local economies that are dependent on clean, beautiful shores. Last year, SM Supermalls collected 100,000 kg of waste with the help of 17,000 volunteers. This year, they aim to double that figure with 200,000 kg of waste, calling on 20,000 volunteers to participate.

How SM Supermalls is Leading the Charge

SM Supermalls is playing a key role in pushing for cleaner coasts through its shoreline restoration efforts. Not only is this initiative cleaning up the mess, but it is also raising awareness about environmental responsibility. The International Coastal Clean-Up (ICC) is back for another year and is shaping up to be the biggest one yet, taking place simultaneously on September 21 in 15 malls participating nationwide (SM By the Bay at SM Mall of Asia Complex, SM Tuguegarao Downtown, SM City Tuguegarao, SM City Bataan, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Olongapo Downtown, SM City Sorsogon, SM City Legazpi, SM Daet, SM City Puerto Princesa, SM City Roxas, SM City Cebu, SM City Seaside Cebu, SM City Mindpro, and SM City General Santos).

Importantly, this effort isn’t just about one day of action. The hope is to inspire Filipinos to adopt long-term habits that will keep our shorelines clean. Every small act, like proper waste disposal or reducing plastic use, can lead to a big change over time.
