Public School Teachers Get More Take-Home Pay in 2018

THE LONG WAIT IS FINALLY OVER for public school teachers. Your favorite Ma’ams and Sirs will now receive higher pay beginning January 2018 according to the Department of Education (DepEd). On top of the higher pay, they will also receive higher allowances.

DepEd’s statement was released right after the implementation of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act (TRAIN) on Monday.

Under TRAIN, people who earn ₱250,000 or less in a year will be exempted from income tax. Additionally, the 13th month pay and bonuses up to ₱90,000 would be tax-free.

The old tax structure will restrict a Teacher 1 with a basic salary of ₱19,620 without dependents to a take home pay of ₱17,220.86. This bumped up by ₱2,792.03 a month under TRAIN.

“With the TRAIN law implementation and the 3rd tranche of the Salary Standardization Law of 2015 in effect, a Teacher 1 is expected to receive a gross basic salary of ₱20,179 and will have a net take home pay of ₱20,012.89,” said DepEd.

Teachers’ annual chalk allowance, which is for the purchase of chalks, erasers, and other classroom supplies and materials, got a raise, too. The amount has been increased from ₱2,500 to ₱3,500. Clothing allowance, on the other hand, has been raised from ₱5,000 to ₱6,000.
