Pinoy artist creates first Filipino Pixar characters for short animated film

Pixar Animation Studios has launched an indie filmmaking experiment called Spark Shorts, which “welcomes new creative voices at Pixar to share their stories.”

One of the participating animated movies is “Float” by Filipino artist Bobby Rubio. According to Rubio, it features the first animated Filipino lead characters of a Pixar short film.

He confirmed this through his Twitter account when one of his followers asked about the two leads of his upcoming short film.

“YES @rachjuramirez those are #Filipino lead characters in my #Pixar #SparkShort!” Rubio wrote.

“The first #Pixnoys”

Rubio fondly called Pixar’s first CGI Filipino characters as “Pixnoys” and continued by saying he is “proud to tell our stories.”

“I know what it means to see our culture represented on screen! #RepresentationMatters,” he tweeted.

Rubio — known for his works in “Tarzan,” “The Legend of Korra,” “Up,” “Inside Out,” “Avatar The Last Airbender,” “Incredibles 2,” and “Hercules” — said he will do his best to tell more Filipino-American stories.

Pixar said the first three shorts will be launched in El Capitan Theater starting on January 18. This will also be followed by a launch on YouTube in the following weeks.
