PHL interested in Russian defense technology

The Philippines is looking to strengthen its defense front. The country has shown interest in procuring Russian defense technologies, according to National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon.

Esperon made the statement during talks with top Russian security officials in Moscow, as the two countries reaffirmed their ties on Friday, May 18.

Esperon told his Russian counterpart, Nikolay Patrushev of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, that the Philippines is “interested in looking at Russian defense technologies” to back up its security agencies.

“Russia is known for its high quality yet relatively affordable equipment. It can be a reliable partner in this regard,” Esperon said.

He also said they see more opportunities for “enhanced security cooperation between our military and law enforcement agencies.”

The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to working together in the fight against international terrorism, transnational crimes, drug-trafficking, and cyber crimes among others.

In the previous year, Russia donated firearms and military equipment to the Philippines with the Manila-Moscow ties improving under Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

The President has repeatedly expressed his inclination to acquire firearms from Russia, as well as his admiration for its leader, President Vladimir Putin.
