PhilHealth Contributions for PWDs, Explained
PhilHealth contributions for PWDs may no longer have to come out of their own pockets if they qualify for the government subsidy. Here’s how it works.
Eligibility
PhilHealth contributions for PWDs will depend on their employment status.
For employed PWDs, the employer and the national government will share the cost of PhilHealth premiums equally. This means qualified employees will no longer have their share deducted from their salaries.
Meanwhile, the national government will fully cover the contributions of eligible self-employed PWDs and OFWs with disabilities.
However, having a disability doesn’t automatically mean your records are already verified for the benefit. You must have a valid PWD ID and be registered in the official Philippine Registry of Persons with Disabilities (PRPWD).
Application Process
If you already have a valid PWD ID, prepare a printed copy of your PhilHealth Member Registration Form and a photocopy of your PWD ID.
Employed PWDs should submit these documents to their employers, who must also provide a certification confirming their employment as a PWD. Alternatively, applicants can submit the requirements in person at their nearest PhilHealth Local Insurance Office.
If you don’t have a PWD ID yet, you can apply through your local government unit’s Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO) or city or municipal social welfare office.
Requirements generally include a completed application form, proof of identity and residence, two (2) ID pictures, and a medical certificate from a qualified professional detailing your disability or condition. Check with your LGU for its specific application requirements.
Verification
After receiving your documents, PhilHealth checks your membership records against the official PWD Registry.
If your official records are confirmed, you will be tagged as an “Indirect Contributor.” For employed PWDs, the subsidy begins in the month their employer submits the complete requirements. For non-employed PWDs, it starts in the calendar year their registration is verified.
If your status is still marked “For Verification,” you must continue paying your PhilHealth premiums until your registration is confirmed.
