PH students bring home 24 medals from math cup in China

Students who represented the Philippines in the 2018 Hua Luo Geng International Golden Cup Mathematics Competition in Xiamen, China proved to be the country’s pride and joy as they bagged 2 golds, 10 silvers, and 12 bronze medals.

Dr. Isidro Aguilar, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild Philippines (MTG), proudly said that the Philippine team was the only international team outside China that won gold medals in the contest. MTG is an organization founded in 1995 whose members train students for international math competitions.

The Pinoy math wizards who won gold medals were Grade 8 students Robert Frederik Uy of Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas and Keean Nathaniel Tang of UNO High School. Both Tang and Uy also received additional bronze medals for ranking in the overall top 7th and 9th places.

Meanwhile, the silver medalists were Cassidy Kyler Tan, Davao Christian High School; Chiara Bernadette Tan-Gatue, Saint Jude Catholic School; David Kyle Picart, University of Santo Tomas-Legazpi; Enzo Rafael Chan, Bayanihan Institute; Iris Lexi Ababon, Colegio San Agustin-Makati; John David Magnaye, Philippine Science High School-Main; Juan Rafael Landicho, Philippine Science High School-CALABARZON; Kody Briones, Emmanuel Christian School; Sean Matthew Tan, Jubilee Christian Academy; and Walsh Nico Adrian Letran, Saint Jude Catholic School.

Those who bagged bronze medals were Alvann Walter Paredes Dy, Saint Jude Catholic School; Andrei Lenard Chan, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Anika Gayle Tan, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Ian Gabriel Hong, PACE Academy; Kei Hang Derek Chan, Saint Jude Catholic School; Kristner Sheyn Saludo, Southville International Schools and Colleges; Mayah Christine Lim, Philippine Science High School-Main; Noel Stephen Dequito, Xavier School-Nuvali; Sigfred Kerwayne Kwan, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; and Sophie Jill Co, PACE Academy.

Approximately 1,000 participants from 20 cities in China as well as teams from Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, and Taiwan joined in the Golden Cup this year, according to team leaders Harry Uy and Renard Eric Chua.
