Pasig River rehab wins Asia RiverPrize Award

The rehabilitation of the Pasig River won the first Asia RiverPrize Awards, an international competition that recognizes successful efforts in revitalizing waterways.

Led by its Executive Director Jose Antonio Goitia, officials from the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRC) were present during the 21st International Riversymposium to receive the recognition. The event was held in Sydney, Australia on Tuesday.

Successful revival of the Pasig River

Pasig River was declared biologically dead in the ‘90s due to persistent pollution. Population growth and industrial development along the riverbanks were among the factors that led to the river’s dismal state.

Thanks to PRRC and its partners’ river restoration and management efforts, Pasig River has been successfully brought back to life.

The International River Foundation (IRF) noted these efforts, which included “delivering quality projects, programs, activities, and advocacies in easement recovery, riverbank development, waste and water quality management, and public awareness.”

The award-giving body lauded PRRC for relocating thousands of families along the riverbanks to decent homes. Along this process, hundreds of private structures along the river were dismantled.

Moreover, PRRC was able to divert approximately 22,000 kilograms of solid waste from 1999 to 2017. This resulted in a significant improvement in water quality, according to the IRF.

PRRC said winning the award will open doors for widespread global recognition and international support. The agency also added that it will also qualify Pasig River for State 2 of the Theiss International Riverprize next year.
