Northern Mindanao is growing, and it needs 7,000+ workers

CAGAYAN DE ORO — Business is booming in Region 10, and along with it comes jobs. No less than 7,000 construction workers are reportedly needed in Northern Mindanao due to the region’s growing economy.

Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (Tesda) Director General Guiling Mamondiong announced this as Tesda launched the Regional Training Center for Construction in Libertad, Misamis Oriental.

Courses on offer at the training center include construction painting, plumbing, tile setting, carpentry, masonry, electrical installation and maintenance, and shielded metal arc welding.

Students who complete the courses will obtain National Certification (NC) II qualifications.

Joel Ortiz, President of the Association of Construction and Informal Workers, lauded the establishment of the center, noting that many workers in Region 10 do not have the necessary qualifications.

“From steel man to laborer and mason, many are interested to work on these areas, but only a few are qualified,” Ortiz said, adding that the quality of the construction workers’ performance must be raised to match their counterparts abroad because this is what investors are looking for.

Apart from improving workers’ skills, Ortiz said the creation of a training center dedicated for construction would boost the sector in the region.

The training center was established through the cooperation of the local government of Libertad, Tesda-10, Cagayan de Oro Bugo School of Arts and Trade (Cobsat) and trainers belonging to the construction and metals and engineering sectors.
