Magbasa Ka Nga: The Significance of National Literature Month

In 2015, the late former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 968, which declared April as National Literature Month. This month-long celebration honors the Philippines’ rich literary heritage, promotes appreciation for Philippine literature, and supports the growth of the nation’s literary landscape.

Reading, But Not Comprehending

But first, did you know that the Philippines boasts a high literacy rate? As of 2021, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported a 99.27% basic literacy rate for Filipinos.

However, a 2022 World Bank study revealed that 90% of Filipino children at age 10 were “learning poor,” indicating they were unable to read and understand simple text. Said study illustrates a substantial difference between the abilities to read and write and the ability to comprehend and apply knowledge effectively—also known as functional literacy.

Why is this alarming? Critical thinking and analytical skills are essential for Filipinos to engage with literature and intellectual discourse and preserve the nation’s literary and cultural heritage.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Filipino literature, written in various dialects like Tagalog and Hiligaynon, reflects the country’s diverse history and traditions. National Literature Month reminds us to protect and promote indigenous and contemporary works. Similarly, literary events encourage writers and readers to explore their heritage together.

Enhancing Critical Thinking and Nationalism

Literature has the capacity to influence both patriotic sentiment and personal viewpoints. Reading works from Filipino authors helps us understand our history, culture, and especially societal issues. From here, libraries and other institutions can develop platforms for discourse to inspire young minds to think critically and nurture national pride.

Strengthening Literary Support and Accessibility

Many Filipinos, particularly in rural areas, still lack access to quality books and educational resources. National Literature Month underscored the importance of expanding literary access through book donations, mobile libraries, and digital platforms.

It’s also crucial to promote digital, media, financial, health, and environmental literacy, along with traditional book literacy, to empower people and help them navigate today’s world.

Despite high literacy rates in the Philippines, reading comprehension skills could be improved. Celebrating National Literature Month not only helps preserve and promote Filipino literature, but we also strengthen cultural identity and encourage meaningful dialogue with one another.
