My Birthday’s On Ghost Month…Now What?
So…you were born on Ghost Month. You have probably heard of the superstitions and other cultural beliefs that come with this. However, have you stopped to think that whether you believe it or not, you are still gonna have a great time?
What is Ghost Month?
This tradition, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is observed in the seventh lunar month in Chinese culture. The math tells us that it usually falls from August to September (this year, it is from August 4 to September 2).
It is believed that during this time, spirits of the deceased return to the world of the living. So, people perform rituals to honor and appease these wandering spirits to ensure their protection and well-being.
“Dates to Avoid”
In Ghost Month, they say there are certain dates to avoid because that is when the spirits are most present. It is said that bad things could happen on these days.
In a post by Madam Suzette, which has garnered a very interesting comment section, she specifies that August 18 will be the worst day of the month. According to her, avoid travelling on this day.
She also notes that if you will have a surgery, you should avoid undergoing them on: August 4, 13, 18, 30, and 31. Those are a lot to remember, right?
Birthday Blues?
As mentioned earlier, people offer prayers and respects to their ancestors and the wandering spirits. They also say not to celebrate birthdays at night, do not make big investments, do not wear dark colors that could mistake you for a mourner, among other beliefs.
That is all fine and dandy. Until you think: what if you were born during this observance? What if you were born during the “worst days?” Will the spirits follow you and jinx your special day?
Celebrate the Little Things
Sometimes, simple celebrations are the best. This could mean pursuing your hobbies, spending time with your loved ones, and being thankful for the blessings you have received.
