More infra support for MIMAROPA cashew, calamansi industries

BUILDING BRIDGES TO AN ABUNDANT FUTURE. The Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) approved the construction of three farm-to-market roads (FMRs) in the provinces of Palawan and Oriental Mindoro, increasing the agency’s infrastructure support for the MIMAROPA region.

The projects in Palawan include the construction and concreting of the 11.52-kilometer Maruyugon – Macarascas FMR in Puerto Princesa City and the construction and upgrading of the 10.40-kilometer Antonino – Taradungan FMR with the 30 L.M. RCDG Bridge in Roxas.

The two above-mentioned infrastructure subprojects are worth a total of P357.36 million, and they are focused on improving the transport of agricultural commodities in the cashew industry.

Meanwhile, in Oriental Mindoro, the concreting of the 5.8-kilometer Tigkan – General Esco – Mahabang Parang FMR aims to provide the same infrastructure support for the calamansi industry. The construction costs P62.45 million, and it will be located in Naujan, which is one of the largest calamansi-producing municipalities in the province.

The MIMAROPA region had been the leading producer of fresh calamansi and cashew in the country, with Palawan and Oriental Mindoro as the largest producers in the region from 2007 to 2016.

The three FMR subprojects are expected to improve road conditions and consequently reduce travel time and transport cost, as well as increase the income of calamansi and cashew farmers in both provinces.
