Breaking The Habit

Fines for illegal parking raised starting December 19

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be raising the fine for parking violations starting Wednesday, December 19.

The fine for unattended illegal parking is now P2,000 per ticket, from its previous fine of P500. Meanwhile, attended illegal parking is now P1,000 per ticket, from P200 each.

Crisanto Saruca, MMDA’s Legislative and Legal Affairs OIC, and the secretariat head of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) said in an interview that these adjusted rates for the fines were supposed to be implemented on December 18, but they decided to move it a day later.

No waiting

Saruca explains that attended illegal parking violators are vehicles that linger too long at an area because they are waiting to pick up people, therefore causing obstruction of vehicular traffic.

This development is despite the MMDA’s halt in towing, which happened last November 28 due to their impounding site in Marikina City becoming very full.

Saruca said that hard-headed motorists parking at vital spots will be immediately towed. “If it is a vital spot, we will tow it despite our impounding site is full. We will make a way to do so,” he said.

He adds that a motorist parking illegally can be ticketed twice a day, three hours in between.

This resolution, proposed by the MMDA, was approved by the MMC last December 7. After approval, the MMC resolution on higher fines for illegal parking was published in newspapers last December 12.
