Filipino Nurse Named Barchester’s Nurse of the Year

Ridel Francisco, a Filipino nurse based in the United Kingdom, has been recognized as the Nurse of the Year at the 2018 Barchester Care Awards in London.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Francisco won the prestigious national care award by besting 1,500 other nominees from across the U.K.

He was first shortlisted as one of four division winners before getting interviewed by a panel of judges for the final round.

An honor for all

“I am very proud and very honoured to be receiving this award,” said Francisco in an interview with the Richmond and Twickenham Times.

“We work hard here at our home with a focus on the people we care for, and not for accolades. But it really is very special to be recognised in this way,” he added.

The Barchester Care Awards aims to celebrate staff and volunteers who always go far and beyond their duties when it comes to caring for residents and patients living in care homes and mental health hospitals.

“His enthusiasm at Lynde House keeps his team on their toes and they’re all the better for it,” said Barchester’s Director of Nursing Julia Atherton who was one of the judges for the Nurse of the Year category.

“Always learning and improving, but never short of time for any resident in his care, Ridel’s sensitive yet hands-on approach demonstrates the high standard of care he sets on himself, which is nothing short of exemplary.”

“Filipinos are valued all over the world for our selfless and committed brand of service that we extend to others,” said the Philippine Ambassador to London Antonio Lagdameo.

“Ridel’s recognition proves that indeed, Filipino nurses are among the world’s best.”
