Filipino Golfer Wins Japan Golf Tour, Bags P10M

The eight-year title drought of Pinoy golfer Angelo Que has ended last Sunday, September 30, in huge fashion by winning the Top Cup Tokai Classic of the Japan Golf Tour.

Que won the competition and beat Y.E. Yang of Korea who was known as the first Asian major winner at the 2009 PGA Championship.

This is Que’s fourth major international title. He won the Worldwide Selangor Masters in 2010, the Philippine Open in 2008, and the Carlsberg Masters Vietnam in 2004.

The closest that he got to winning it all was when he finished second place. He lost to Japanese Toshinori Muto in a playoff for the ISPS HANDA Global Cup in 2015.

Two Crucial Birdies

The 39-year-old Que relied on back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th to close out with a 66. Combined with his three other sub-70 rounds of 68, 69, 68 for a 17 under-par total of 271, Que was two strokes better than joint runners-up Y. E. Yang and Won Joon Lee who are both South Koreans.

“It’s a relief really that I finally won in Japan. I played so well this week but those two crucial putts were a gift from God,” said Que who was on his fourth year on the Japan Tour.

Aside from the trophy, Que also took home a 22-million yen or about P10.4 million jackpot for his victory.

“I’m not getting any younger so I couldn’t be happier with his breakthrough win,” Que said.

Que dedicated his win to his wife Tracy and two children.

“I owe it to them. They’ve always been the reason why I’ve been working hard to play well and stay competitive.” said Que who is scheduled to fly home this Tuesday.
