Fil-Am Nurses and Community Volunteers Honored for Their Excellent Service

There are many outstanding Filipino American nurses and community volunteers in the United States. And on October 20, they were given recognition by the Philippine Heritage Institute International (PHII).

PHII is a private foundation that was established in 1989. Its main goal is to help the advancement of Filipino-Americans through various youth development programs, volunteerism, and especially the promotion of Filipino Culture.

The foundation’s “Tribute 2018” gave distinction to several nurses, doctors, and community volunteers for their outstanding service at the Long Beach Marriott. The awardees received honors under two categories: The White House Millennium Council Initiative: 20th Annual “Award to Outstanding Filipino American Nurses” and the 12th Annual President’s Award: “Profiles in Service, Pillars of Community.”

Ten Outstanding Nurses

Here are the 10 Outstanding Filipino American Nurses who were honored by PHII for their professionalism and compassion: Mimi Afable, Cora M. Cadavona, Lerma Aloria Estudillo, Roselyn “Linda” Jones, Jessie Misa Jurado, Marie Florentina Lucina-Navarro, Danilo P. Tejada, May Victoria Torralba, Josephine Ulgado, and Julie Salva Cruz Villalon.

Community Volunteers

Individuals who made an impact on their respective communities were also honored. The awardees were immigration lawyer Edmund Anciano who used to work for a public interest law firm dedicated to immigrant rights and civil rights; multi-awarded community organizer Meynardo J. Ascio who is instrumental in reaching out to multi-cultural and professional groups doing social, civic and religious engagements; professor Ray De Leon, founder of the Mobility Center at Cal State Los Angeles; and Assemblyman Phillip Chen, a legislator and Republican member of the California State Assembly.
