DoTr rolls out modern jeepneys

Metro Manila commuters will finally get to experience modern jeepneys, as the Department of Transportation (DoTr) dispatched around 150 upgraded jeepney units to operators on Friday, July 20.

The DoTr assured that the modern jeepneys are in compliance with the existing environmental and product standards of the Bureau of Standards of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The jeepneys were also made to have side doors instead of the old rear entrance, as well as a higher ceiling to comfortably accommodate standing passengers.

Moreover, some units were built with provisions for persons with disabilities (PWDs), closed-circuit television (CCTV), dash camera, WiFi connection, global positioning system (GPS), speed limiter, and automatic fare collection system.

The vehicles have also been manufactured with either a Euro-4 compliant emission system or an electric-powered motor that produces less pollution or none at all.

The modern jeepneys come in three types: Class 1 with a capacity of 9 to 22 passengers including the driver; Class 2 which seats 22 passengers and accommodates standing passengers; and Class 3 that accommodates 22 passengers and above including the driver.

Transportation Undersecretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Thomas M. Orbos said that the rollout of the modern jeepneys is just the first step in ensuring that commuters have the quality public transportation they deserve.

The DoTr aims to replace public utility vehicles that are 15 years old and above under the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program.
