DOT shines light on ‘unadulterated’ Soccsksargen treasures

The spotlight is on Soccsksargen, as the Department of Tourism (DOT) hypes up promotions on the beauty of the region, which offers “unadulterated” treasures to local and foreign tourists.

On May 4, 2018, DOT Region 12 kicked off a three-day event called “Treasures of SOX: Travel & Trade Expo” at Glorietta Activity Center. The DOT aims to increase tourist arrivals in 2017 by 5 to 10 percent this year.

Sox, a short term for Soccskargen, pertains to the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, as well as the cities of Cotabato, Kidapawan, Tacurong, Koronadal, and General Santos — which comprise region 12.

The grand expo was organized by DOT Region 12 along with the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Agriculture, Tourism Promotions Board, Philippine Information Agency, and the Local Government Units of the region.

“Treasures of SOX” featured the natural and cultural richness of Soccskargen, as well as the fresh and processed bounty of its seas and land. It also included a travel fair, trade fair, investment forum and matching, cultural shows, and fashion shows.

“You know (how) a lot of people see Mindanao, they will always have safety and concerns in their minds, but we won’t be here if we think that our visitors will be put at risk in coming to our places. We are inviting you to our home, so we know that you are safe,” DOT Region 12 Director Maria Rica Bueno said.

Bueno also stressed that Sox is a home of indigenous culture and tradition that directly links to Filipino identity; therefore, the region is where tourists can immerse in authentic experiences.

Highly recommended experiences are immersion at the Lake Sebu Community and Lamlifew Cultural Village; the viewing of Maitum Burial Jars; and a Kule Homestay, Sikat T’boli Homestay, and Glan Heritage Tour.
