Catamaran Trash Boat Boosts Manila Bay Cleanup Efforts

Manila Bay is one step closer to a cleaner future with the arrival of a catamaran trash boat. On January 31, SM Prime Holdings donated this state-of-the-art vessel to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to enhance cleanup operations. This boat will help remove floating waste efficiently, reducing pollution and improving the bay’s water quality.

A High-Tech Solution for Water Pollution

The catamaran trash boat features an advanced collection system that quickly gathers debris, preventing it from harming marine life. Operated by the DENR Metropolitan Environmental Office – South Zone, the boat will patrol Manila Bay, collecting trash that accumulates on the water’s surface. Additionally, it will assist in long-term waste management efforts, ensuring cleaner shorelines and healthier ecosystems.

Unlike manual cleanup efforts, which can be slow and labor-intensive, the catamaran efficiently skims the water, picking up both large and small debris. This process not only saves time but also prevents waste from breaking down into microplastics that threaten marine biodiversity. Furthermore, the boat’s mobility and efficiency allow it to target heavily polluted areas, ensuring a more thorough cleanup.

This donation strengthens DENR’s existing cleanup strategies, including programs like the Parañaque Adopt-a-River project, which aims to restore waterways flowing into the bay. By keeping the bay cleaner, the catamaran also contributes to reducing the risks of flooding caused by clogged drainage systems.

Stronger Partnerships for a Cleaner Bay

“This catamaran represents our shared commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility,” said SM Supermalls Vice President Engr. Liza Silerio. By introducing modern waste collection methods, SM Prime supports the government’s mission to restore Manila Bay’s natural beauty.

Furthermore, DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized the agency’s dedication to strengthening partnerships that create lasting environmental improvements. However, maintaining Manila Bay’s cleanliness requires ongoing collaboration and innovative solutions like this catamaran trash boat.

Moreover, this boat’s impact will extend beyond daily waste collection. It will raise awareness about the importance of pollution control, inspiring more sustainable practices. Ultimately, the catamaran trash boat serves as a powerful tool in the fight against water pollution, moving Manila Bay closer to a cleaner and healthier future.
