Bicam OKs 105-day maternity leave

Mothers are close to spending more time with their newborn and recovery from childbirth, as the 105-day paid maternity leave for female workers was approved by a Congressional bicameral conference on Monday. The new law applies to female employees in the government and private sectors regardless of the type of childbirth.

A panel was tasked to reconcile Senate Bill No. 1305 and House Bill No. 4113. According to the panel, seven days out of the 105 days maternity leave could be used for paternal leave.

An additional 15 days of paid leave may also be availed by solo mothers.

Moreover, the availment of maternity benefits would apply to every instance of pregnancy or without limit. Under the harmonized bill, women are also given the option to extend their leave to an additional 30 days without pay.

The current law allows only a 60-day paid maternity leave for normal childbirth and 78 days for cesarean delivery.

The proposed measure will have to be ratified by both chambers of Congress. Then, it needs to be sent to President Rodrigo Duterte for signature and enactment into law.

Good news could not have come at a better time

The approval of the expanded maternity leave bill came at a perfect time. Gabriela Rep. Emmi de Jesus hailed this development as their party launched their month-long #PinkOctober campaign for women’s health.

De Jesus said the longer maternity period will benefit women workers amid the pressure of making ends meet at a time when prices have increased. She also added that this recognizes the productive role of women in our economy.
