Agri dep’t opens TienDA farmers’ market in Taguig

The Department of Agriculture (DA) opened a direct-from-farmers store in Taguig City. The new establishment is part of the DA’s continuous measures to provide low-cost farm products to the public.

The store, which is under the DAs’s “TienDA Malasakit” program, launched on Sunday at Taguig Lakeshore Hall in Bicutan through a partnership with the city government.

Farm products that await consumers

At least 30 farmers and fishermen’s organizations will sell their products in the newly opened market at farm gate prices, according to Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol. These include tuna and other goods from General Santos City.

Tomato farmers from Kalayaan, Laguna will also bring three tons of their produce. Consumers can also expect to find shrimp of the vannamei variety coming from across the country. Central Luzon tilapia and Pangasinan milkfish suppliers will also set up stores in the Bicutan market.

Meanwhile, the National Food Authority (NFA) allocated 1,000 bags of rice that will be sold at P27 per kilo. Farmers from Central Luzon will also be selling well-milled rice at P39 per kilo.

In a social media post, Piñol said the program will be replicated in other cities and towns all over Metro Manila in order to stabilize the supply and prices of basic food commodities.
