360 Students to Benefit from DBP’s New Scholarship Program

The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) just launched a new scholarship program that will benefit some 360 students from 14 higher education institutions.

The students, who are taking courses that support the current administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program, are the main beneficiaries of the program.

Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Cecilia Borromeo said during a press briefing on Friday that the new scholarship program is part of the bank’s Resources for Inclusive and Sustainable Education (RISE) program. RISE is DBP’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program for education.

Five-Year Scholarship Program

The new scholarship program was developed from DBP’s Endowment for Education Program (DEEP). It will run for five years starting from 2018 until 2023. It also has a P500-million budget that will directly come from the bank’s income.

The RISE scholarship is designed for students who are taking courses such as engineering, real estate management, education, hotel and restaurant management (HRM), associate HRM, agriculture, forestry and environmental science, and accountancy.

A sure way to help the students be successful in life is to ensure that they will be able to go to school and finish their studies, according to DBP CEO Borromeo. She also added that doing this will help the country as well.

“It’s a pity that we have unemployment at the other side of the equation as a problem, and at the other side of that equation is we don’t have enough skilled professionals to help the country build infrastructure that we need to have in a developing country like ours,” said Borromeo.

“Let us help our young and qualified students so that they will become very productive citizens and help this country become as progressive as our neighbors in the ASEAN region,” she added.

Here are the schools included in the initial implementation of the program: Bulacan State University, Emilio Aguinaldo College Dasmariñas, Cavite; Lyceum of the Philippines University, Cavite; Mindanao State University, Marawi City; Mindanao University of Science and Technology; Misamis University, Our Lady of Triumph Institute of Technology, Palawan State University, Philippine Normal University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Cebu, University of the Philippines, Los Banos; West Bay College; and West Visayas State University.
