36 Bridges in Metro Manila to Undergo Rehab

Weak and old bridges in Metro Manila will be strengthened through a P1.076 billion project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

According to DPWH National Capital Region Director Melvin Navarro, 36 bridges in ten cities of Metro Manila will be retrofitted, rehabilitated, and replaced in order to conform to the standard design prescribed in the DPWH design/seismic guidelines, criteria, and specifications. The project aims to ensure that vital bridges are resilient in the event of large magnitude earthquakes.

Navarro said that the priority projects in NCR includes retrofitting a total of 26 bridges (which costs P726.782 million), rehabilitating nine bridges (which amounts to P323.753 million), and replacing one bridge (which costs P25 million).

Currently, the load capacity of old bridges in Metro Mania is constrained resulting in the detour or rerouting of heavy vehicles. Other bridges, however, are also narrow limiting the volume of vehicles. Navarro said that these problems will be addressed with the retrofitting and widening of the bridges.

Tripa de Gallina Bridge in Pasay City, which is rapidly deteriorating, will be replaced.

Meanwhile, the bridges that are up for retrofitting or strengthening are as follows: Algeciras, Antipolo, McArthur, Muelle dela Industria Bridges, and Nagtahan Link Bridge 1 in Manila City; C.P. Garcia and Pasig Boulevard Bridges in Pasig City; Quezon Bridge in Taguig City; Pasong Tamo Bridge in Makati City; Canumay, Polo, Malinta Interchange and Torres Bridges in Valenzuela City; Alabang-Bayanan, Cupang, Insular Bilibid Prison, and Lower Buli Bridges in Muntinlupa City; Marcos Alvarez Bridge 1 in Las Piñas City; Malibay Bridge 1 and 2 (Northbound and southbound), and Tramo Bridge in Pasay City; Culiat Bridge 1 and 2 (Northbound and southbound) and Lagarian Bridge 1 in Quezon City; and Cut-Cut Bridge (Northbound), Cementina.

Buting Bridge and C5/Ortigas Interchange in Pasig City; Barangca Viaduct (Flyover), Marcos, Marikina, and Nangka Bridges in Marikina City; and Delpan, Mabini Bridges and Nagtahan Flyover in Manila City will undergo major rehabilitation.
