SM Prime’s Solar-Powered Initiatives Push for a Cleaner PH

In a time when sustainability is no longer optional, SM Prime’s solar initiatives are leading the way in clean energy efforts in the Philippines. With a bold Net Zero 2040 goal, SM Prime Holdings is proving that business growth and environmental care can go hand in hand.

A Solar-Powered Shift

Across the country, 47 SM Supermalls now have solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed. Combined, these systems generate an impressive 63 megawatts of peak capacity. This shift toward clean energy reduces the malls’ reliance on fossil fuels and significantly cuts carbon emissions—one of the key goals of the SM Prime Solar program.

Why Solar Power Matters in the Philippines

The Philippines enjoys abundant sunlight all year round, making it an ideal location for solar energy use. However, many parts of the country still rely heavily on coal and other fossil fuels for electricity. This not only contributes to high energy costs but also worsens the effects of climate change.

Through SM Prime’s solar efforts, the company is tapping into one of the country’s most valuable natural resources—sunlight. By converting it into clean, renewable energy, SM Prime not only lowers its operational costs but also sets an example for other large institutions in the Philippines to follow. It’s a move that benefits both the business and the environment.

Mall of Asia Leads by Example

The iconic SM Mall of Asia (MOA) is a prime example of this green push. It boasts a 3-megawatt solar PV system, including a striking solar-covered walkway made up of 555 panels. Beyond its clean energy use, MOA was recently honored with the Sustainable Energy Award for a Private Institution, showing that SM Prime’s Solar efforts are not only effective but also recognized.

With the MOA Sky walkway, SM Mall of Asia harnesses solar energy to deliver a combined 3MW of power, enough to run 1,000 escalators a day or power 1,800 homes for a month.

Creative Green Solutions

Innovation is also part of the strategy. At SM City Bicutan, solar-powered parasols provide nighttime lighting—an eco-friendly solution that merges form and function. From rooftops to walkways, every part of the mall experience is being reimagined to support clean energy under SM Prime’s Solar initiative.

Looking Ahead

SM Prime remains focused on operational energy efficiency and expanding its use of renewable energy solutions. As more malls follow suit, the company continues to demonstrate that a large footprint doesn’t have to mean a large carbon footprint.

In the journey to a cleaner Philippines, SM Prime proves that sustainability can be both powerful and practical.
