Seasonal Tropical Fruits: Catch Peak Ripeness This Summer!
When it comes to seasonal tropical fruits in the Philippines, nothing beats eating them at peak ripeness. But how exactly do you know if a fruit is hinog or still hilaw? Here’s a simple guide to help you pick the best ones this summer (and some easy ways to enjoy them)!
Mango: Sweet and Fragrant
Perhaps the face of the country’s seasonal tropical fruits, a ripe mango smells sweet even before you cut it. Take note that while the skin may still have some green flecks, it should feel slightly soft when you press it. Try to avoid mangoes that are rock-solid (unripe) or overly wrinkled ones (overripe).
You can enjoy the sweet taste of mangoes as a shake or in a dessert like mango graham or tiramisu.
Melon: Heavy and Aromatic
A ripe melon feels heavy for its size and has a light, sweet smell near the stem. Visually, the skin should have a yellowish tone, not green. And if it smells too strong, it might be overripe.
If you’re thirsty, turn your chosen fruit into a classic melon juice or into strips for a samalamig twist.
Watermelon: Deep Sound, Bright Color
Try tapping or knocking on a watermelon. If it sounds hollow, it’s ripe for the taking. And if there’s a yellow spot on the skin, it ripened on the ground. When you break it inside, the flesh should be bright red and juicy.
You can enjoy watermelon in slices, cubes, or even as a quick shake!

Avocado: Soft But Not Mushy
Gently press the avocado. It should yield slightly but not feel too soft. If the stem comes off easily and it’s green underneath, it’s good enough to eat.
You can enjoy avocados in a variety of desserts: shakes with milk and sugar, ice cream, or even just on their own.
Papaya: Orange and Slightly Soft
A ripe papaya turns yellow-orange and feels a bit soft when you press it. Meanwhile, an unripe piece will be green and feel firm, and an overripe one will be too soft with dark spots.
Enjoy papaya slices, as a shake, or squeeze in some calamansi for extra flavor.
Knowing how to spot ripe fruits makes a big difference. With these tips, enjoying our seasonal tropical fruits becomes easier…and a lot more delicious!
