DENR, SM Supermalls lead “Save From Extinction” campaign

On December 12, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and SM Supermalls headed the “Save From Extinction” campaign, which aims to protect 6 of the Philippines’ critically endangered species. Furthermore, it stresses how when we save these creatures from further destruction, we upkeep biodiversity and our ecosystems: “As we save them, we save ourselves.”

A Hotspot in Crisis

The Philippines is both a megadiverse country and a biodiversity hotspot, home to 52,000 species, half of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Tragically, more than 2,000 of these species are vulnerable to being critically endangered. Habitat loss caused by deforestation, urban sprawl, and unsustainable practices threatens not only wildlife but also the ecological systems that support human life.

Who Needs Saving?

Recognizing the need for urgent collective action, DENR, SM Supermalls, and select wildlife organizations are funding several conservation efforts. They are focusing on the following species whose survival is key to preserving the nation’s ecosystems:

  1. Philippine Eagle: These are critically endangered, with fewer than 400 pairs left.
  2. Tamaraw: Unique to Mindoro, this species faces genetic risks and habitat threats.
  3. Dugong: Essential for maintaining seagrass health, its numbers are declining rapidly.
  4. Philippine Cockatoo: While vital to seed dispersal, it also falls victim to illegal trapping and deforestation.
  5. Pawikan: They are vital for marine ecosystems; however, their nesting sites are disappearing.
  6. Palawan Pangolin: It faces an uncertain future as one of the world’s most trafficked animals.

Why Does This Matter?

The “Save From Extinction” campaign underscores the importance of collaboration in conservation.

SM Supermalls, with its massive presence across the country, serves as a platform for raising awareness and inspiring action. Through initiatives like its Kultura merchandise collection and various donation drives, they are helping amplify DENR’s message: protecting biodiversity is essential for our survival.

Protecting these species is not just about saving wildlife—it’s about preserving the ecosystems that sustain our communities. By supporting the “Save From Extinction” campaign, we contribute to a future where both people and nature can thrive.
