Quezon Ave, Cebu BRT projects to continue, says DOTr

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) affirmed on Wednesday that the bus rapid transit (BRT) systems in Quezon City and Cebu will push through. The announcement came months after the government paused its implementation due to certain issues.

Transportation Assistant Secretary Mark De Leon said studies confirmed that setting up the BRT system along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City and in Cebu was possible.

De Leon said the DOTr, along with the World Bank and the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), conducted an inspection and evaluation of the corridors of Cebu and Quezon Avenue. These agencies found that the corridors can accommodate the BRT systems.

Moreover, De Leon said the completion of the BRT project is expected in three years.

“We have sent letter to DOF (Department of Finance) that we will push through with the program ASAP. In three year’s time we will have a BRT,” he said.

A cure for congestion

The Metro Manila BRT-Line 1 will run 12.3 kilometers long from Quezon Memorial Circle to Manila City Hall via the Elliptical Road in Quezon Avenue and España Boulevard. The project cost is estimated to be worth P4.8 billion.

Meanwhile, the Cebu BRT project is 23 kilometers long and will ply the Bulacao-Ayala-Talamban route. Its estimated cost is P16 billion.

Additionally, the EDSA BRT-Line 2 is still undergoing evaluation.
