President Duterte Signs Law Doubling Salaries of Cops and Soldiers

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. The start of the year couldn’t get any better for cops and soldiers.

President Duterte has signed into law the Congress Joint Resolution modifying the Base Pay Schedule for Military and Uniformed Personnel (MUP) at Malacañang Palace on January 9, fulfilling his campaign promise to increase the salaries of cops and soldiers.

As stated in the Congress Joint Resolution (JR) no. 1, s. 2018, the base pay of a Police Officer (PO) I in the Philippine National Police (PNP) or a Private in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and equivalent ranks in the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine Public Safety College (PPSC), and the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) will be doubled, resulting to a monthly base pay of P29,668.

On average, there’s a 58.7 percent increase for all MUP ranks. This will be effective January 1, 2018.

A second Base Pay Schedule will also be implemented starting January 1, 2019 according to the resolution. MUP ranks starting from First Chief Master Sergeant in the AFP and other equivalent ranks up to the rank of General in the AFP and other equivalent ranks will have a salary increase. On average, there will be a 72.18 percent increase for all ranks.

The total amount of the increase in base pay is approximately P64.2 billion. The agencies concerned will fund the increase using their respective budgets. In case of deficiency, they can request to use the Miscellaneous Personnel Benefits Fund (MPBF) according to National Budget Circular no. 574 dated January 10, 2018.
