Beyond The Islands

Pinoy cake makers make waves around the globe

Two Filipinas have achieved tremendous success as cake makers in the United Kingdom. A former nurse and caregiver, Valeri Valeriano and Christina Ong, have won in the largest cake show in the world — the Cake International.

The two best friends are now managing their own business as well. While Valeriano and Ong are happy with their cake business, Queen of Hearts Couture Cakes, they said that Cake International opened them up to a lot of opportunities.

“Sweet accident”

Valeriano and Ong have won bronze, silver, and gold medals in the past for their superb cake decorations. They have also received various awards from Cake Masters Magazine.

Their success in cake decorating roots from what the two fondly call a “sweet accident.” Valeriano shared that they discovered their passion for baking in 2011 when they were making a Mother’s Day cake for their friend.

The two looked at numerous baking recipes on the internet and watched tutorials on YouTube. It’s incredible how far they have come from that “sweet accident.” Currently, they have four bestselling buttercream books and a global following. Truly, they have inspired others to also pursue other things beyond one’s original profession. Valeriano and Ong are now touring the world to teach others how to decorate cake with the use of buttercream.
