Philippines Won a Silver and Three Bronze Medals in Sepak Takraw World Championships
Despite forming a new lineup, the Philippine team showed up in the 2018 King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championships and took home medals for the pride of the Philippines.
The recent global competition was held in Nakhon Rachasima, Thailand where 31 countries participated, the Filipinos won a silver and three bronze medals.
“We have tapped new athletes purely for exposure, but we still ended up with good results,’’ said Pilipinas Sepak Takraw Association Inc. President Karen Tanchanco-Caballero.
The silver medal was won by the women’s team in the premier hoop category. While the men’s team won three bronzes in the premier hoop, regu, and team regu.
“It was a great showing for our sepak takraw players despite having a new lineup. Again, they made our country proud,’’ said Go For Gold top executive Jeremy Go who helped support the team financially.
Team Composition
The Philippine team is composed of both seasoned players like Rheyjey Ortouste, Ronsited Gabayeron, Emmanuel Escote, Joshua Gleen Bullo, Alvin Pangan, John Carlo Lee, and John John Bobier.
They were joined by players backed by Go For Gold and the Philippine Sports Commission including John Jeffrey Morcillos, Joeart Jumawan, Nestleer Bandivas, Christian George Encabo, and Regie Reznan Pabriga.
Back in 2016, the team won a gold medal in the men’s doubles event, two silver medals in the team regu and hoop, and the bronze medal in the regu.
The women’s team lineup is composed of Mary Melody Taming, Abegail Sinogbuhan, Gelyn Evora, Josefina Maat, Jean Marie Sucalit, Jea Mae Pepito, Jocielle Fernandez, Aisa Sabellita, Allyssa Bandoy and Lhaina Lheil Mangubat.
On the other hand, the men’s team was led by Coaches Rodolfo Eco, Hector Memarion, Metodio Suico Jr. and Junmar Aleta. Romulo Ruedas Jr., Esperidion Rodriguez, Gena Mark Saavedra and Deseree Autor took the helm on the women’s squad.
