Hidilyn Diaz Bags Silver, Bronze in Weightlifting World Championships

THE PHILIPPINE’S weightlifting pride has done it again.

Three-time Olympian Hidilyn Diaz was able to snatch a bronze in the women’s 53 kg division of the 2017 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship in Anaheim, California on Friday, Manila time.

Diaz started slow placing only sixth in the snatch with 86 kg. She was able to clinch the bronze by bouncing back in the clean and jerk with a second-best lift of 113 kg for a total of 199 kg.

Sopita Tanasan of Thailand took the championship with a total of 201 kg in the snatch and the clean and jerk. The silver medal, on the other hand, was won by Kristina Shermetova of Turkmenistan with a total of 204 kg.

Tanasan also won gold in the clean and jerk in the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics with Diaz finishing silver lifting 114 kg. She also topped the snatch with a 96 kg lift, which allowed her to beat Rio Olympics gold medalist Hsu Shu-Ching of Chinese Taipei who had a 93 kg tally.

Hsu wasn’t able to compete in the clean and jerk because of an elbow injury.

Hidilyn Diaz won a silver medal in the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. She is now aiming to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Her goal, once she qualifies, is to get the country’s first Olympic gold medal.
