Three Filipino Students garnered awards in International Physics Meet

Three students from the Philippines garnered podium finishes in the 49th International Physics Olympiad, held last July 21 to 29 in Lisbon, Portugal.

A silver medal was awarded to Steven Reyes of St. Jude Catholic School, while bronze medals were awarded to Mikhail Torio and Charles Bartolo.

The competition had an experimental exam, where they were challenged on paper transistors and the viscoelastic properties of a polymer thread, and a theoretical exam where they were challenged with detection of gravitational waves and the physics of blood flow and tumor growth.

Out of the 396 delegates, Reyes ranked in the 88th percentile, Torio ranked in the 68th percentile, and Bartolo ranked in the 58th percentile. The Philippine Team ranked 34th out of the 87 participants, its best rank yet in 13 years.
