Eileen Sarmenta & Allan Gomez: The Murders That Shook the Nation

On a quiet evening in June 1993, two bright University of the Philippines-Los Baños students – Eileen Sarmenta, a 21-year-old tourism student, and her boyfriend Allan Gomez, an agriculture senior – vanished without a trace. What followed would become one of the most infamous criminal cases in Philippine history, exposing a web of political power, police corruption, and the brutal abuse of privilege.

The Fateful Abduction

On June 28, 1993, the couple was leaving a friend’s birthday party in Los Baños, Laguna when they were intercepted by armed men. Witnesses reported seeing Eileen Sarmenta being forced into a van at gunpoint, with Gomez attempting to protect her before being overpowered. The kidnappers were later identified as bodyguards of Antonio Sanchez, the wealthy and influential mayor of Calauan.

Days of Horror

For four agonizing days, the students were held captive at Sanchez’s private resort. Investigators would later reveal that Eileen Sarmenta was repeatedly raped by multiple men, including the mayor himself, while Gomez was brutally tortured in an adjacent room. Autopsy reports showed Gomez had been burned with cigarettes, beaten with blunt objects, and finally strangled to death. Eileen Sarmenta was executed with a single gunshot to the head.

The Cover-Up Attempt

When the bodies were discovered in a remote field, authorities initially treated it as a routine crime. But as student activists and journalists dug deeper, a shocking pattern emerged:

  • The van used in the abduction was registered to Sanchez’s family

  • Local police had delayed investigating the missing persons report

  • Key witnesses reported receiving death threats

The Trial That Captivated a Nation

Public outrage reached a fever pitch when:

  • Sanchez flaunted his wealth in court, arriving in luxury vehicles

  • Witnesses mysteriously recanted testimony

  • Defense lawyers employed delaying tactics for years

The turning point came when one of Sanchez’s bodyguards turned state witness, detailing how the mayor had personally ordered the murders to eliminate witnesses to the rape.

Justice Served?

In 1995, Sanchez and six accomplices were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the case took another shocking turn in 2019 when Sanchez nearly secured early release under controversial good conduct rules, sparking new protests.

The Enduring Legacy of Eileen Sarmenta

Today, Eileen Sarmenta‘s name remains synonymous with:

  1. The fight against political impunity

  2. Campus activism for women’s rights

  3. The ongoing struggle for judicial reform

Memorials at UP Los Baños ensure new generations remember this tragedy. As one professor noted: “Every year when we tell new students about Eileen and Allan, you can hear a pin drop in the lecture hall.”

The case continues to resonate, particularly when new crimes by powerful figures emerge. As long as justice remains imperfect, the story of Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez serves as both warning and inspiration.
