Eileen Sarmenta & Allan Gomez: The Murders That Shook the Nation
The Eileen Sarmenta case is one of the most horrifying and widely remembered crimes in Philippine history. It involved the brutal abduction and killing of two students from University of the Philippines Los Baños—Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez—on June 28, 1993, in Calauan, Laguna. The case shocked the nation not only because of its brutality but also because it involved powerful individuals, including former Calauan mayor Antonio Sanchez. The incident exposed a disturbing abuse of authority and trust. It quickly became a symbol of injustice and impunity. Even decades later, the case continues to be remembered for its tragic and painful story.
The Abduction of Two Students
On the night of June 28, 1993, Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez were forcibly taken by men linked to Antonio Sanchez. The two students were shoved into a white vehicle against their will. They were then brought to Erais Farm in Barangay Curba, a property said to be owned by the mayor. Upon arrival, the victims were separated. Allan Gomez was beaten by the mayor’s staff, while Eileen Sarmenta was taken elsewhere. This marked the beginning of a series of horrific events. The Eileen Sarmenta case would soon unfold into a tragedy that shocked the nation.
Violence and Brutality at Erais Farm
At the farm, Allan Gomez was subjected to severe physical abuse by several individuals. He was beaten repeatedly and struck with a rifle, leaving him critically injured. At one point, after being hit hard, Allan collapsed—but one of the perpetrators chillingly said, “His death will come later.”
Meanwhile, Eileen Sarmenta was “gifted” to Mayor Sanchez and brought to a room where further acts of violence were committed against her. The situation escalated as both victims were later transferred into a vehicle along with the perpetrators. Despite Allan’s condition, he was still alive at that point. But in doesn’t end here, the brutality of the Eileen Sarmenta case continued to intensify.
The Final Moments of the Victims
As the night progressed into early morning, Eileen Sarmenta was dragged out, visibly distressed and restrained. During this moment, Antonio Sanchez reportedly said, “I am through with her. She’s all yours.” The victims were then transported once again. Allan Gomez was eventually killed after being shot.
Eileen Sarmenta was brought to a sugarcane field where further abuse took place. In one of the most heartbreaking moments of the Eileen Sarmenta case, she pleaded for her life, saying:
“Please, you have taken everything from me. My shame, my honor. But please, spare me my breath. It’s the only thing I’ve got left.”
Despite her desperate plea, she was killed shortly after. Her death marked the tragic end of a horrifying ordeal.
Justice Served?
In 1995, Sanchez and six accomplices were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Then, the case took another shocking turn in 2019 when Sanchez nearly secured early release under controversial good conduct rules, sparking new protests. However in March 27, 2021, the former Calauan Mayor died due to chronic kidney disease and prostate problems.

The Enduring Legacy of Eileen Sarmenta
Memorials at UP Los Baños ensure new generations remember this tragedy. As one professor noted: “Every year when we tell new students about Eileen and Allan, you can hear a pin drop in the lecture hall.”
The case continues to resonate, particularly when new crimes by powerful figures emerge. As long as justice remains imperfect, the story of Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez serves as both warning and inspiration.
