DepEd stresses importance of financial literacy

The Department of Education (DepEd) aims to instill improved financial literacy among teachers and learners. It is one of the agency’s priority programs under the leadership of Secretary Leonor Briones.

The DepEd Chief reiterated this during her speech at the Financial Education Stakeholders Expo 2018 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay. The event was organized by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

Uplifting Filipino lives through financial literacy

DepEd has been training teachers for the Financial Literacy Education (FLE), which will be integrated into their classes. Briones said that approximately 6,000 teachers from the National Capital Region (NCR) have undergone the pilot stage of the modules. The said modules were developed by DepEd, the BSP, and the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).

The program is set to be rolled out nationwide and will be integrated in several subjects across grade levels. Subjects will include Mathematics; Science; Filipino; English; Technology and Livelihood Education; and Araling Panlipunan. Also included are Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health; and the Homeroom Guidance Program. A few select senior high school (SHS) core and applied subjects will also be included.

Briones stressed the need of giving importance to resources, funds, and money as well as setting aside savings before spending in order to live a fuller life.
