Budget Boost: A hefty P2.7B for Central Leyte Infrastructure in 2018

#BuildBuildBuild: In 2017, the second legislative district of Leyte received a P1.7 billion budget for infrastructure and development. This year, the amount has increased by a billion pesos totaling to P2.7 billion.

The higher budget was pushed by Leyte Second District Representative, Henry Ong, and will be used mostly to fund new infrastructure projects that are vital to the economic transport and development of the area.

“We have considerable amount for health and education programs, but the majority is still for infrastructure development since this is the key to unlock economic opportunities in Leyte,” Ong said.

“One thing I noticed in my visit to different areas, especially those located upland is the difficulty of life because of poor access from the town center.”

P400 million was also allocated to construct bridges in Mayorga and Dagami towns while P85 million will go to a new road project in the town of Jaro. The road will lead to several natural tourist destinations found in the village of Villa Conzoiloi including the Silawa Falls, Duka Falls, and Kabagtan Falls.

“There is already an existing road going towards Villa Conzoilo. The fund will be utilized for concreting of the road to increase tourism and ease traffic and transport of agricultural products,” District Engineer Carlos Veloso said.

Once completed, the road will provide an alternative route to Ormoc City and will pass through another tourist destination: Lake Danao.

The widening and road reblocking along the Palo-Carigara-Ormoc road, which is a highway that cuts across Leyte province, will also be covered by the budget.

Below are the towns covered by Leyte’s second congressional district:

  1. Barugo
  2. Burauen
  3. Capoocan
